If there is one word that sums up this year so far, it is uncertainty. Business has not gone on as usual and uncertainty swirls everywhere in the world. In response, the UM-Dearborn College of Business (COB) moved quickly to ensure our students have what it takes to not only survive, but thrive in these rapidly changing times. Thanks to the hard work of our dedicated faculty and staff, I can confidently assure you that our mission and our goals have remained steadfastly directed at the success of our students in the midst of all this uncertainty.

Success can be measured in many ways—employment to start. Almost 90% of COB’s 2019 undergraduates reported being gainfully employed within six months of graduation. Through support from alumni and donors like you, many COB students start their careers with little to no debt. In 2020, nearly 40% of our graduating seniors graduated with no debt, while 76% graduated with debt below $25,000. We hear our students and alumni, and we are determined to keep a Michigan degree accessible and affordable. At COB, we believe that starting a career with less debt gives graduates a huge advantage and access to more opportunities. You make this possible.

We won’t stop innovating and our teaching will continue to give students the practical knowledge they need. With interdisciplinary studies being more important, COB students are now able to pursue a new concentration in Information Systems Security. We have also expanded the Business Studies secondary major to students in the College of Health and Human Services.

And of course we continue to keep our students on top of business. For instance, students have access to 12 Bloomberg terminals in the upgraded Finance Lab. We created a financial investment course in which students managed a live portfolio and became Bloomberg certified. I am proud to report that the portfolio gained 16% in its first year, handily beating the S&P 500 gain of 10.8%.

Our students make us proud and they deserve your support. While the COB’s mission does not change, we know that our students have been experiencing much more stress this fall. There are so many pieces missing for them, but you can help ensure their experience and struggle leads to grit and success. You can mentor students through our alumni office. You can participate in COB programming. You or your company can open doors for internships during these unique times.

You can help our students have the financial stability that they so truly deserve and need. While we have prided ourselves on teaching good business for many years at UM-Dearborn, we need to react to a significantly impacted global economy and business world. These students have a whole new set of business problems that will need solutions, creativity, and leadership. With your support, our students will be ready.

Please make your gift to the COB today.

Thank you, Go Blue and Go Dearborn!

With best regards,
