UM-Dearborn

The year 2020 was a trial for all of us. When the pandemic began, I talked about how courage is optimism for tomorrow in the face of our struggles today. As the coronavirus spread, our campus leadership held to a well-worn mindset from my time in the Army: “Mission First, People Always.” Despite the challenges presented by this “new normal,” UM-Dearborn has succeeded in maintaining our mission to provide students with an excellent, accessible education that will help them prosper for a lifetime.

Like most universities, COVID-19 initially forced us to move classes online, but our professors have not missed a beat. UM-Dearborn has never compromised our commitment to providing a quality learning environment for our students. We have lent out laptops, built wifi hotspots in our parking lots, created an emergency financial fund for those in economic need and increased our counseling services to help those struggling emotionally. This was all done with the love and care of a neighbor helping a neighbor— the kind of effort you would expect from UM-Dearborn.

Our results in handling the pandemic have been phenomenal. To protect our campus community, we remained online this summer and saw an increase in enrollment. We adopted a hybrid design this fall, keeping 92 percent of classes online while ensuring those who need to use classrooms or gain hands-on experience can do so. In response, our enrollment hours remained steady.

We have succeeded because of the resilience of our students, the flexibility of our faculty and staff, and from the support of alumni and donors. Our community has shown what it means to be leaders and best. I am writing today to ask for your continued support, which will help us maintain this high level of excellence and cultivate more pathways of opportunity for our students.

Your donations have tangible results for our students. One of our immediate relief scholarship recipients shared, “This award gives me hope that I can finish paying for my studies. It lowers my financial stress and uncertainty, allowing me to pursue my last few classes and finish strong with my degree.” In a normal year, over 88 percent of incoming UM-Dearborn students receive some form of financial aid. That’s only possible through your generosity.

Your support is changing the landscape of campus as well. Despite challenges caused by the pandemic, we moved forward with our Engineering Lab Building project and expect to hold classes in the building next semester. This beautiful, new building will draw engineering students from across the region, and will become a destination for the entire campus.

The university has also made significant progress on our campus’s inclusive and thoughtful strategic planning process. Following engagement with hundreds of faculty, staff and students; the campus community has identified 4 critical priorities and 17 strategic ideas that will guide UM-Dearborn’s next decade and beyond.

COVID-19 has changed the environment in higher education. Parents and students want degree options close to home now more than ever, and UM-Dearborn offers a rewarding college experience. With your financial commitment we can make a much-needed difference in our communities, the region, and the world.
