The start of this academic year was much anticipated and unique. Typically, the fall comes with student move-in, welcome week activities, and football games, but earlier this year, our paradigm shifted and our “new normal” unfolded. More than 600 students are diving into another year of study at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, and things may look different, but their practices and disciplines are as creative as ever. We have quickly come to understand the importance of creative thinking in our rapidly evolving environment.

The pandemic has proved that the virtues of creativity and flexibility are of immeasurable worth. Stamps students have adapted to a wide variety of learning environments and have risen to the challenge with a spirit of resilience. COVID-19 changed how artists and designers conduct their work, and Stampers responded to the shifting landscape around them by adapting and overcoming obstacles. Through their creative education, they found innovative ways to thrive in a digital world. From designers and entrepreneurs to artists and innovators, the adversity they are faced with encourages them to push beyond their boundaries and find creative results.

As a school, creative solutions are essential to helping students along their journeys. Now more than ever we have a need for scholarship support. By offering awards to bridge the tuition gap we can aid students, allowing them to continue their creative education without the worry of financial constraints. The A&D Alumni and Friends Scholarship Fund provides direct support from donors to those who need it most. Thanks to this integral fund, the School is able to raise the bar of a U-M art and design education for all of our students by offering the best and most accomplished people the opportunity to attend the Stamps School. Our students’ creative training helps them go on to careers of meaning and impact, and your generosity truly changes their future.

Through forward-thinking and thoughtful planning from our faculty and staff, the Stamps School is providing an uncompromising learning experience this year. We are preserving the exceptional quality of a U-M experience through enhanced in-person, hybrid, and remote educational components. These efforts are sustainable by generous contributions from people like you. Donations to the A&D Opportunity Fund allow us to be responsive to these types of real-time challenges due to the global pandemic. We continue to adopt new policies and reconfigure building spaces to ensure student, faculty, and staff wellbeing. Unrestricted support allows us to meet the unforeseen and unpredictable needs that are sure to arise over the second semester as the School continues to incur costs of our public health informed academic year. Your gift helps expand our efforts to enrich the Stamps student experience and has the potential to make an impact unlike any other.

Stampers go on to affect great change in our world. From the day they first walk in the doors to the moment they graduate; your gift helps them every step of the way. Today, I hope you will choose to support the tremendous work being done by art and design students by making a gift to the Stamps School. Your generosity helps now and well into the future.

Thank you for joining me in this commitment to the School and the work our students are doing. I look forward to the opportunities we will create and the impact and progress we will make together in the coming year.

In gratitude,
